Australian cloud computing leading the world

Australia is a world leader in the cloud computing space, with rapid growth in uptake from Australian companies. These findings come from the company DatacentreDynamics, which has recently released its yearly update on cloud technology.

The study predicts that, by the end of 2014, roughly half of all Australian companies will be deploying or will have already deployed some form of cloud technology.

As a result, Australian companies are outpacing companies in other parts of the world with their uptake of internet-based technology. In Australia, the percentage of companies embracing cloud computing has grown from 17 per cent in 2011 to 45 per cent in 2014.

Around the world, these numbers are much lower, with an increase from 11 per cent to 35 per cent in the same timeframe. This represents a 106 per cent growth over three years, compared to a 150 per cent expansion in Australia.

The survey also suggested that one of the reasons cloud computing is becoming so popular is the very high costs associated with managing a data center. Australia has the third-highest costs for data center operations, making it increasingly costly for companies to maintain an in-house IT system.

As companies more more of their functionality into the cloud, business process management and other processes are likely to become increasingly cloud-based. This unlocks many of the savings that come from cloud computing, while also offering a solution suitable for mobile devices.

With the Australian government also introducing new guidelines for companies interested in cloud computing, it is likely that these trends will only increase with time. For business leaders across the country, now is a good time to seriously consider moving important corporate processes into the cloud.
